Ravindra Jadeja was initially designated as CSK’s captain at the beginning of IPL 2022, but he was substituted by MS Dhoni midway through the season.
In the 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Chennai Super Kings embark on another captaincy experiment as MS Dhoni steps aside for Ruturaj Gaikwad to assume leadership of the team. Two years earlier, the Super Kings undertook a similar change, with Ravindra Jadeja taking over from Dhoni as captain. However, this decision was reversed midway through the IPL 2022 campaign due to Jadeja’s underwhelming performance as skipper. CSK head coach Stephen Fleming now anticipates Jadeja playing a supportive role for the new captain Gaikwad within the squad.
Fleming disclosed that Dhoni made the decision after careful consideration. The wicket-keeper batsman then shared the news with his teammates during dinner before informing the management.
The CSK coach doesn’t believe Ruturaj’s promotion will impact Jadeja, as he still considers Jadeja to be a ‘tough character’.
“Fleming remarked, ‘Jadeja etched his name into CSK folklore with those two shots he played in the final two balls of the previous IPL. Jadeja is resilient, and he possesses a significant leadership quality. Ruturaj will undoubtedly seek his assistance,'”
When questioned about the rationale behind Ruturaj’s appointment, the coach elaborated, “Ruturaj is extremely self-assured, he demonstrates an excellent approach towards his fellow players, and he commands great respect within the group.”
Dhoni faced injury issues towards the end of last year, and there were concerns about his fitness leading up to the new season as well. However, it’s Dhoni’s determination that surpasses his constraints.
“His body is stronger than it was last season, and the most remarkable aspect about him is his resilience and determination. His capacity to bounce back repeatedly is truly inspiring. Coupled with the skills he still possesses, he has been striking the ball magnificently during practice sessions,” remarked Fleming.
